Mariah Stapleton is a Sugpiaq/Alutiiq artist from Kodiak, Alaska, carrying forward the artistry and traditions of her ancestors through beadwork, weaving, skin sewing, regalia making, and more. As an eighth-generation Kodiak resident and the first language speaker and cultural bearer in four generations, she bridges heritage and contemporary expression through her work.
Through Weaving Traditions, Mariah shares jewelry and handmade pieces rooted in traditional practices like hunting, harvesting, and preparing natural materials. Her Native name, Liisngaq—meaning “One who Likes to Learn”—reflects her commitment to lifelong learning and teaching, which she continues through workshops and community engagement.
